A lot of people I know could use a little extra money on the side, but don’t really know what to do about it. I have compiled this short list of very common jobs that are easy to do, and easy to make some extra cash at. They are great jobs to do on the weekend or during the evenings after your normal job, and can be a lot of fun. I am also including a few simple tips on how to get started on each.
1. Craigslist & garage sale buyer & seller. By choosing a niche you are familiar with, it is fairly easy to snag up some good deals from garage sales and craigslist. Also, don’t forget about flea markets and swap meets. After getting a good deal on some items, you have your choice of reselling them on Ebay, craigslist, at your own garage sale, on consignment at a local shop, through the local newspaper classifieds, or wherever else you can think of. This is something fun and easy to do, and you can start out small with basically no risk. Give it a try.
2. House cleaning. Cleaning houses weekly can earn you some extra money, and is fairly easy to get started in, with low overhead. Try handing out flyers to neighbors, and let them know about your new business. This type of business can grow quickly through referrals, since good cleaners are hard to find. Don’t be ashamed to ask customers for referrals. Be sure to check locally to see if you need any kind of insurance to do this sort of work.
3. Graphic design, website designs, computer programming. Through site such as Elance, you can bid on projects that other people need done. They range from designing logos for $50 to programming complex databases for $100k+. If you have any sort of computer skills, chances are there are some jobs you can bid on.
4. Lawn maintenance and snow removal. Similar to house cleaning, this is another business that will give you recurring work, and referrals. After you get enough customers, you get to keep doing the work week after week. Try to focus on one specific area to avoid having to drive all over town, and be sure to try to schedule jobs that are close to each other for the same day.
5. Virtual assistant. Depending on what field you are familiar with, you will have different opportunities to work from home as a virtual assistant. How about approaching real estate agents about posting craigslist ads for them? Or creating email newsletters for local businesses to send out to there customers? Or following up on email enquiries for a local business that is too busy to handle it on there own. The possibilities are endless, and you can easily choose something you are good at.
So that is 5 ideas for you, and all of them require basically no money to get started. You could make a few phone calls and have some work going within a day or two if you really tried. Who knows, this may be the first step to owning your own highly successful business! What do you think, worth a try?
