What are you really working for?

I’ve noticed that after the holidays, after people have had some time off from work and reconnected with friends and family; their attitude changes. Not for long, but it changes for a little while. They complain a little more about getting up for work that first week back. They ask questions like “Remind me again why I work so much?” Or “I wish I had a couple more weeks off!” And I hear these comments from people that have a stable job, a nice house, and just about everything they want. What they don’t have is freedom. They are in their own little prison every day. They have to get up at a certain time, and stay in their “cell” until a certain time, when they get released for the evening.

Most people hate their fixed work schedule, but just deal with it.

Of course, my viewpoint varies greatly from many that are locked in to their dream jobs, but I know most people secretly think about starting their own business some day. Do you?

What do you get out of working a “real” job?

So ask yourself, what are you really working for? Do you like trading your time for money? If you had 24 hours to live, would you exchange half of those hours for your current hourly rate you earn at work? Are those hours worth $10 each? Maybe $20 each? It’s hard to put a price on your precious time. Maybe it’s time to think about that a little more, and see how it hits you. There are alternatives, and some are much easier to attain than you might expect.

Give your mind a chance to run wild, and ask yourself what you would do if you could do anything.

You only live once. Don’t let the fear of failing at something stop you, you can always try again.
